A contrarian look at the monetary shift most investors still don’t see coming.

Most still think Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD) is a speculative asset.

I think that’s the mistake.

What very few investors understand is that BTC may ultimately become something much bigger . . .

A new foundation for how value itself gets stored across the global financial system.

And ironically, the forces accelerating that shift are not coming from Silicon Valley or crypto enthusiasts.

They’re coming from geopolitics.

Right now, we’re watching the global trade bending, fracturing, and slowly reorganizing in real time.

The Iran conflict is exposing cracks that were already forming beneath the surface of the global monetary system.

For decades, the U.S. dollar has dominated international trade because the world trusted it as the primary reserve currency. And to be clear, the dollar is still dominant today.

But dominance is not the same thing as permanence.

What caught my attention recently was Iran successfully selling oil in Chinese yuan during the conflict.

On the surface, people dismiss that as insignificant because the volumes remain relatively small.

I think that view misses the bigger point entirely.

The important part isn’t whether the yuan replaces the dollar. I don’t think it will.

What matters is that countries are now actively experimenting with alternatives.

I think that can change everything.

Because while nations may transact in yuan temporarily, very few governments, corporations, or investors truly want to store long-term wealth in Chinese currency long term.

And increasingly, they may not fully trust storing all of it in dollars either.

That’s where BTC enters the scene.

For the first time in modern history, there is now a globally transferable monetary asset tied directly to scarcity and energy itself.

That matters more than most people realize.

In hindsight, I believe future generations will look back and find it bizarre that people once accepted money disconnected from scarcity altogether.

BTC changes that equation as its entire system is built around finite supply, energy expenditure, and mathematical certainty.

And adoption is quietly accelerating much faster than most understand.

According to a recent Bitwise/VettaFi survey, 32% of U.S. financial advisors now allocate BTC to client portfolios.

Really think about that for a moment.

If advisors were to move just 2% of their roughly $145 trillion in assets under management into BTC, the implied demand would equal more than 42 million BTC.

But there are only about 20 million coins in total currently circulating.

That supply imbalance is extraordinary.

And it tells me the market still has not fully grasped what happens when institutional capital collides with a truly scarce asset.

That’s why I believe what’s happening in BTC right now is much larger than another crypto rally.

The recent strength in BTC may actually be signaling the early stages of a global monetary transition already beginning beneath the surface.

This isn’t something that I think will happen overnight or all at once but gradually . . .

Through feedback loops created by war, trade fragmentation, rising distrust between nations, and weakening confidence in existing monetary structures.

That’s the lens I’m using to analyze crypto right now: As a potential long-term restructuring of how global value moves and gets stored.

And if that thesis continues playing out, I believe most investors are still drastically under-positioned.

One of the most powerful psychological forces in investing is something called normalcy bias — the tendency to assume the future will mostly look like the past.

It’s why major shifts are often dismissed early.

People assume existing systems will continue functioning the way they always have because that’s what feels familiar and stable.

And the longer something has been true, the harder it becomes to imagine it changing.

Paul has watched this pattern repeat throughout market cycles.

For example, most investors initially dismissed the internet as a niche technology.

They underestimated smartphones and ignored streaming.

And many wrote off BTC for years because it didn’t fit within the traditional financial system they already understood.

That same psychology may be showing up again today.

For decades, the U.S. dollar has dominated global trade and reserve markets. Because of that, many investors simply assume the current monetary system will remain largely unchanged indefinitely.

But markets and financial systems don’t stay static forever.

Paul: A Global Squeeze = Big Opportunity 💰

A contrarian look at where the next big opportunity is forming.

Most investors still think of shipping as a slow and sleepy “old economy” industry.

That’s exactly why they’re missing what’s happening right now.

Because what I’m seeing is a structural shift unfolding in real time driven by mounting pressure inside the global supply chain.

And in my experience, these are the kinds of setups that create the most powerful, under-the-radar bull markets.

At the center of it all is a simple reality: The world doesn’t have enough shipping capacity for what’s coming next.

And that gap is quietly widening.

Geopolitical friction around key chokepoints — especially the Strait of Hormuz — is already forcing longer, less efficient routes.

What used to take three to four weeks is now stretching into five to eight weeks.

That may sound incremental, but across a global system, it’s massive.

Longer routes don’t just delay shipments but also effectively remove supply, because each vessel is tied up for longer.

Multiply that across thousands of ships, and capacity tightens fast.

Now look at where we are today . . .

Global fleet utilization is already near maximum, with just 0.6% to 0.7% of the world’s container ships sitting idle. In other words, nearly every available vessel is already in use.

At the same time, demand continues to build for energy as well as products that rely on oil and natural gas as feedstocks, including plastics, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals.

That’s where shortages can begin to surface in places most investors aren’t even paying attention to yet.

And while demand is rising, supply simply can’t respond.

Ships take years to build.

Even with an expanding order book, global capacity is only expected to grow by about 7% to 9% annually. This is nowhere near fast enough if demand continues climbing and routes stay extended.

The result is already showing up in pricing.

Charter rates remain firm, with certain segments seeing 10% to 20% increases in 2025, and overall pricing still hovering near the higher end of historical ranges.

That’s not random. That’s the early stage of a supply-driven bull market.

It’s also why we didn’t wait.

Across Mampilly Research, we began building exposure to shipping last year and are still adding positions as opportunities arise.

There’s a moment in every market cycle that almost nobody recognizes while it’s happening.

It doesn’t show up during the crash or the panic.

It comes just before that when everything feels easy, when gains feel normal, and when people start to believe this is simply how markets work.

That’s where I believe we’re at right now.

I saw a headline this week celebrating the Nasdaq’s massive run over the past few years, describing it as “fun.”

And that word stuck with me because when markets start to feel like entertainment, something important has already shifted beneath the surface.

This is when people stop thinking about risk and stop asking what something is truly worth.

Instead, they focus almost entirely on price and on what might move next, how fast it might go, and how much they can make if they catch it in time.

That shift from investing to speculation is subtle, but it changes everything.

What we’re seeing today is the result of years of conditioning.

Since 2020, a massive wave of new participants has entered the market, many of them experiencing a stretch where buying strength and holding through dips consistently paid off.

Over time, that behavior didn’t just work, it became reinforced. And now, for many, it feels like the default way markets operate.

But markets don’t reward the same behavior forever. They adapt, and eventually they challenge the very habits they helped create.

I’m also seeing risk that’s quietly building in areas that aren’t getting nearly enough focus.

We’re seeing tightening conditions in physical energy markets, ongoing geopolitical tensions, and clear signs of strain beneath the surface.

Yet major indexes continue to act as if none of it carries meaningful consequences.

That kind of disconnect rarely resolves slowly. More often, it corrects quickly, and usually at a moment when the fewest people are prepared for it.

That’s why at ATG Digital, we’re now tightening risk, taking profits sooner, and raising cash where it makes sense.

We’re also being far more selective about where we’re putting capital to work.

Could markets keep going higher? Sure.

But in my experience, the most dangerous environments are the ones that feel the easiest, when everything looks good on the surface, and nobody feels urgency to protect themselves.

More often, it leads to something far less obvious and far more frustrating.

A market that moves sideways for longer than anyone expects.

History shows that after periods like this — when valuations stretch, leadership narrows, and optimism runs high — markets tend to stall, chop around, and test patience.

And the investors who keep buying dips often find themselves stuck, with capital tied up in trades that fail to deliver meaningful returns over time.

That’s why at ATG, we’re not chasing what’s popular now.

We’re avoiding overextended AI semiconductor stocks where perfection is already priced in, and we’re steering clear of software stocks that are still working through a necessary valuation reset.

Because when I stepped back and looked at the underlying structure of the market, the idea of a lasting glut never made sense.

For more than two decades, governments worldwide have steadily restricted exploration and production.

Capital investment slowed, and projects were canceled. And most importantly, the system lost its ability to respond quickly to rising demand.

That matters because when demand didn’t fall the way many expected, there was no cushion.

No excess supply waiting to come online, and no meaningful spare capacity anywhere in the system.

So oil didn’t behave the way an oversupplied market typically would.

Prices didn’t stabilize and fade. Instead, they tightened and moved higher, revealing what was actually happening beneath the surface.

This is the key distinction most investors are still missing.

In my opinion, this isn’t a short-term cycle that resets in a few quarters.

I believe it’s a huge structural shift driven by years of policy decisions, now colliding with real-world demand and geopolitical pressure.

As this continues, higher energy costs are being embedded into supply chains, contracts, and entire economies, just like labor costs were after COVID.

That’s how inflation becomes persistent, not temporary.

The trade itself is straightforward, but not easy. It requires stepping in before the consensus fully shifts.

For those who have been following me, this probably didn’t come as a surprise.

For the past year, I’ve been telling readers that Japan’s economy isn’t just having a rally — it’s going through a once-in-a-generation resurgence.

After more than 30 years of deflation, stagnation, and investor neglect, the Japanese market finally broke out above its 1990 highs.

Inflation returned, corporate reforms accelerated, shareholder payouts increased . . . and global capital began flowing back into a market that had been ignored for years.

That kind of shift creates a cycle, but one that never moves in a straight line.

In the past few weeks, Japanese stocks pulled back from recent highs as oil prices surged, bond yields climbed, and geopolitical tensions rattled markets.

Because Japan imports most of its energy, spikes in oil often hit Japanese equities harder than other markets, which is exactly what we’ve seen recently.

To most investors, this looks like a warning.

To me, it looks like a sale.

And the kind of volatility I expect in the middle of a larger trend.

Even though the Nikkei dropped sharply over several sessions earlier this month, it recently stabilized and is now beginning to rebound as conditions cooled.

That said, however, the market environment today is very different than it was in past cycles. Moves are faster, reversals are sharper, and sentiment can change quickly.

Where the Gold Portfolio Is Winning Now 🥇

Paul: This Is How Cycles Flip 🔄

Paul’s contrarian take on where the next big opportunity is forming.

After the sharp “Liberation Day” selloff in April 2025, we made a move that most investors didn’t understand at the time.

That selloff was triggered by the sudden announcement of sweeping U.S. tariffs that rattled global markets, sent stocks plunging in a matter of days, and sparked one of the fastest bursts of panic we’ve seen in years.

The market recovered quickly, but what mattered to me wasn’t the rebound — it was what happened next.

Retail money rushed back into the same overcrowded growth stocks, pushing valuations to levels that simply didn’t make sense anymore.

We were seeing companies trading at 40X, even 50X sales, and forward earnings multiples that assumed perfection for years to come.

That’s when I made a decision most investors hate making.

Instead of chasing the rebound, we began rotating out of growth — and into commodities, industrials, and precious metals across our model portfolios.

At the time, that move looked early. Maybe even wrong to most.

But after nearly 40 years in the markets, I’ve learned this lesson the hard way: Valuations don’t matter until suddenly they matter all at once.

And now in early 2026, we’re seeing the exact warning signs I was looking for, indicating that growth stocks are still drastically over-owned and dangerously overvalued.

These are the kinds of signs that often show up late in a cycle:

⚠️ Rallies are short-lived and sold off quickly

⚠️ More stocks are hitting new 52-week lows, with very little buying interest

⚠️ Valuation multiples remain elevated, despite margin contractions

⚠️ Retail investors buying the dips while institutions sell into strength

⚠️ Capital quietly rotating into undervalued sectors like commodities while crowd stays fixated on yesterday’s winners.

We began adding exposure to precious and industrial metals early in 2025.

And it proved to be the right call.

One thing I’ve learned after decades in the markets is that prices don’t move just because of economic data.

They can move because of narratives. When a powerful story takes hold, capital follows it, sometimes for years.

Right now, the narrative behind this bull market is scarcity in a world still flooded with liquidity.

Since the financial crisis, and especially after COVID, central banks have injected enormous amounts of money into the system.

Even after rate hikes, that liquidity never really disappeared.

You can see it in the way asset prices keep finding support even when the headlines look negative.

When there’s too much capital chasing returns, investors start looking for assets that can’t be printed.

That’s why gold, silver, oil, energy, and natural resources have been strong themes, and it’s also why inside ATG Digital we positioned heavily in gold and silver mining stocks over the past year.

Many of those positions are up double digits as the scarcity trade pushed precious metals higher.

But markets don’t stand still, and neither do narratives. After last year’s parabolic run, gold and silver are starting to look crowded.

Buyers are now running into profit-taking, and liquidity demand for U.S. dollars is putting pressure on traditional “flight to safety” trades.

BTC stands out as the purest form of scarcity.

Its supply is permanently capped at 21 million coins, a limit that’s fully visible on the blockchain with a currency can be divided into tiny fractions so anyone in the world can own a piece.

That mix of fixed supply and global accessibility gives BTC a real advantage over traditional scarce assets, positioning it to capture growing market share in this narrative.

The trend we positioned for early — and it keeps delivering.

Oil prices rallied in recent weeks as tensions in the Middle East raised concerns about supply disruptions, pushing crude higher and putting energy back at the center of market headlines.

But in our view, this recent spike isn’t the full story.

The move we’re seeing today is part of a much bigger trend that’s been building for years.

Global energy and oil supply have been tight after about a decade of underinvestment, along with years of government policies that have discouraged and limited new production.

It demands enormous capital, massive resource consumption, and years of investment.

You don’t simply unwind globalization (especially amid rising resource nationalism) without igniting a commodities and industrial renaissance.

In fact, this shift could rival the scale of post-World War II reconstruction, and markets are only beginning to price it in.

Right now, most investors are treating the artificial intelligence (AI) trend like a guaranteed shortcut to stock-market riches.

So, I’m not chasing “AI” simply because it’s popular.

I want it when expectations are wrong, the price is right, and the crowd has moved on to the next shiny object.

Market Psychology: The Anchoring Trap 🧠

One of the most expensive mistakes investors make without even realizing it is anchoring.

Anchoring happens when an investor’s brain treats an old price as “the real value,” even when the market environment has changed.

For instance, a stock hits $100, drops to $65, and suddenly $65 feels “cheap” . . . not because the opportunity improved, but because they were mentally stuck on the old high.

The same thing happens in reverse: a stock rallies, and investors hesitate to buy because it “feels expensive,” even though the trend is just beginning.

This bias quietly ruins timing.

This is why so many investors buy too early in downtrends, average down emotionally, and convince themselves they’re being disciplined when they’re actually just reacting to a number on a chart.

Bitcoin’s Pain Is the Setup 📈

Right now, almost everyone seems to think Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD) is breaking.

A 45%+ drop from the highs has traders panicking, headlines screaming “crypto winter,” and weak hands racing for the exits.

To most investors, this feels like proof the cycle’s over.

But I see it very differently.

This isn’t driven by collapsing fundamentals, but rather something far more fragile: excessive leverage.

This was a market built on 50X and 100X perpetual futures, borrowed conviction, and traders convinced they couldn’t be wrong — until reality stepped in and corrected the bet.

And that’s exactly what markets are supposed to do. Fast, violent drawdowns like this tend to cleanse speculation quickly.

Historically, those are far healthier than long, grinding bear markets that drain confidence for years.

When leverage gets flushed fast, recovery often comes faster than most expect.

Meanwhile, the structural tailwinds for crypto are still in place.

BTC exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are now global, institutions and corporations hold BTC and Ethereum USD (ETH-USD) on their balance sheets, and regulatory clarity continues to advance.

In my view, the structural foundation of this market is stronger today than at any prior correction, even if temporary price action says otherwise.

So, while it’s painful for investors at the moment, I see a constructive reset and a setup to the upside underneath all the noise.

That’s why I’m sticking to my long-term conviction in BTC, staying patient and selective in the crypto sector.

Rotating away from crowded growth tech stocks and into areas like commodities, precious metals, energy, cyclicals, and international markets wasn’t the comfortable call.

How We’re Playing It ⚡

One of our favorite positions tied to the AI-driven electricity demand is Atmos Energy Corporation (NYSE: ATO).

$ATO is a pure-play natural gas distributor with significant exposure to rising demand.

It operates over 75,000 miles of pipeline infrastructure, including one of the largest intrastate natural gas networks in Texas.

The company provides regulated natural gas distribution and transportation services to residential, commercial, public sector, and industrial clients.

Strong Numbers, Steady Growth 📊

Yesterday, the company released strong fourth quarter (Q4) and full-year 2025 earnings.

It generated revenue of $4.7 billion — a 12.9% increase year over year (YoY).

Operating income rose to $515 million, up 12%, while net income reached $1.2 billion in 2025.

That figure is projected to grow another 15.8% to $1.39 billion in 2026.

Q4 alone delivered $403 million in net income, a 14.5% YoY gain.

And for income-focused investors, $ATO paid a quarterly dividend of $1 per share in Q4, bringing its total 2025 dividend payout to $3.61 per share.

It’s the kind of steady, high-conviction stock we believe belongs in our Silver Tier model portfolio.

The BTC trade became an “easy” consensus trade when the catalysts above emerged.

But as some of these tailwinds lost steam (notably the SBR) — combined with Satoshi era whales cashing out — the trade lost momentum.

Michael Saylor’s Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR) wasted no time buying the dip:

now holds 713,502 BTC valued at $52 billion while the company’s valued at just $35 billion.

It’s trading at a 33% discount relative to its BTC holdings.

Tom Lee’s Bitmine Immersion Technologies Inc. (NYSE: BMNR) added 41,000 Ethereum USD (ETH-USD) for $6 billion.

Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest also added $72 million worth of crypto exposure.

Right now, professional investors who see the opportunity in this dip are loading up on crypto exposure.

As the crypto market turns a corner, it will catch most mainstream investors by surprise.

We’ll likely see investors who short BTC be liquidated, pushing the asset higher as they’re forced to close their positions.

As this happens, positive headlines tend to emerge, the price trends up — and suddenly — we’ll see investors rushing back into BTC and altcoins.

Beyond upgrading existing infrastructure, is embedding AI directly into the network stack.

Its self-optimizing networks can now predict outages, identify bottlenecks, and even repair themselves autonomously while reducing downtime and slashing operational costs.

Financials Tell the Story 📈

Last week, released its fourth quarter (Q4) 2025 earnings, and the results exceeded expectations.

Net sales for the quarter hit $7.8 billion, representing a 5% decline year over year (YoY), but still ahead of Wall Street’s projection of $7.5 billion.

Adjusted gross margin rose to 48%, thanks to a higher-margin software and services mix, along with cost cutting and operational streamlining.

Net income surged 76% YoY to $970 million for the quarter.

For the full year, reported net income of $3.23 billion, a sharp turnaround from just $45 million in 2024.

With this momentum, the company announced its first share buyback program in years, authorizing $1.7 billion in common stock repurchases.

The company also raised its quarterly dividend to $0.13 per share, further signaling confidence in its financial position.

We believe the shift toward recurring software revenue, paired with operational discipline and increasing AI infrastructure demand, sets the stage for sustained profitability.

Yet despite all this progress, the stock still seems surprisingly overlooked . . .

Valuation Still Looks Attractive 🧐

has a market cap of $36 billion, positioning it as a meaningful player in the network infrastructure space without being too bloated for future growth.

The company trades at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of just 1.4X.

In our opinion, that’s cheap considering its exposure to a multi-decade upgrade from 5G to 6G and broader, AI-driven demand for real-time connectivity.

But right now, the market hasn’t fully priced in the company’s role in enabling AI to scale.

And that disconnect is exactly why we acted when we did.

Paul: Greenland — From Joke to Geopolitical Gambit

When President Donald Trump first tweeted about buying Greenland during his initial term, I laughed along with many others.

It seemed like just another one of his outlandish quips — bold and unpredictable, but probably just theatrics.

Fast-forward to 2026, and that “joke” doesn’t feel funny anymore.

Today, the situation with Greenland is far more serious.

In my view, this island belonging to Denmark — with only about 56,000 people and one active U.S. military base — now stands as a stark symbol of resource nationalism and deglobalization.

Having chronicled these shifts at ATG Digital for over a year, I’ve watched this transformation unfold with a mix of alarm and fascination.

What began as a meme-worthy moment has evolved into a catalyst — forcing nations to scramble for security in a fracturing global order.

And that brings us to the deeper force at work . . .

The Cracks in Globalization 🌍

I’ve been sounding the alarm on the breakdown of globalization because the signs are everywhere.

For over 50 years, globalization has been the bedrock of our economic world — a system that promised interconnected prosperity, free trade, and shared growth.

To be fair, it did deliver on many of these benefits.

This era lifted billions out of poverty worldwide, most notably transforming China from a struggling, underdeveloped nation into a full-fledged superpower.

In the late 20th century, when the West invited China into the globalization club, the expectation was clear:

Exposure to markets, ideas, and capital would nudge the People’s Republic toward democracy, liberalization, and Western-style governance.

I believed that story once, too. But that’s not what happened.

Instead, China played the game masterfully, adhering just enough to the rules to amass power while bolstering the authoritarian grip of its Communist Party.

This divergence was a rude awakening to the U.S. and other Western powers.

China didn’t evolve into a benign partner; it became a strategic rival willing to weaponize its dominance.

Take rare earth minerals . . .

These crucial elements power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles (EVs).

China controls the majority of global supply and has already threatened to restrict access.

And that’s just the opening move.

Imagine this dominance applied to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, clothing, or even basic consumer goods.

Lulled into complacency over the past several decades, Western economies assumed China would remain a lightweight in geopolitics.

But this shock — seeing a manufacturing giant turn its strengths into leverage — ignited a firestorm of resource nationalism worldwide.

The New Global Scramble 🏃

Resource nationalism, as I see it, is the direct offspring of deglobalization.

Countries can no longer rely on seamless supply chains or mutual trust; they’re hoarding what they need to survive potential cutoffs.

This urgency explains America’s renewed interest in Greenland.

It’s a strategic play for untapped resources such as rare earth metals, minerals, and even potential shipping routes as Arctic ice continues melting at an alarming rate.

Greenland represents nations racing to secure commodities from remote corners of the earth, from African mines to South American lithium fields.

Markets are responding in real time, with commodities skyrocketing.

Copper prices hit record highs, and other metals aren’t far behind.

Every country is now stockpiling buffers against potential disruptions like the supply chain bottlenecks we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Except global resource infrastructure isn’t built for this.

Picture 100 nations simultaneously demanding stockpiles of copper, zinc, nickel, and silver; supply chains buckle under the pressure.

We’ve watched this unfold firsthand at ATG Digital.

Stocks such as Southern Copper (NYSE: SCCO) and Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX) surged more than 50% in the past year.
