Remembering 9/11 🕯️
On this day 22 years ago, the world witnessed the deadliest attack on U.S. soil in history.
Thousands of lives were lost — but even more heroes were made.
Today, we honor the firefighters, police officers, and everyday citizens who laid down their lives for others, as well as those still affected by the aftermath of that day. 🙏
We hope you’ll do the same.
As Paul often says, in the end, only love remains. ❤️
Paul Mampilly: September 11, 2001
I was on the F train going from my Brooklyn apartment to my Manhattan office. The route to Manhattan has a short above-ground section, smoke billowed from the World Trade Center.
At the time, I worked in midtown Manhattan on Park Avenue between 48th and 49th Street.
As soon as I walked in, someone told me one of the Twin Towers had collapsed and were under attack. People were crying — colleagues, friends, and family were in those towers and nearby.
No one had ever experienced anything like that day, so we had no idea what was happening . . .
Is Another Plane Coming for Us?
The Park Avenue office is about three miles from the World Trade Center. Was another plane coming to hit us, too? No one knew.
At some point, everything started shutting down. With the subways closed and no family in New York, I thought I had nowhere to go.
Somehow, I got through on my cell phone to a friend who lived further uptown in Manhattan. She told me to come and that I could crash there if I couldn’t get home.
Next, I tried calling my mother in India, but I wasn’t able to get through to her on my cell phone.
When I got out of the office, there was chaos — police cars, fire trucks, and the smell of the burning buildings.
At that point, I was unsure what would happen. I went to a nearby ATM and took as much cash out as I could.
Then, I started the three-mile walk to my friend’s apartment.
Staying Calm & Dealing With Things as Best You Can
I’ve been on my own since I was a kid in India, attending boarding schools from about the time I was six to the time I was 16. I left my family to come to the United States to go to college when I was 18.
While 9/11 was a shock, growing up so independently taught me to stay calm and deal with things as best I can.
It also influenced my investing.
You see, financial markets won’t give you easy conditions all the time.
Just like in any crisis, you must stay calm and make the best judgments given the facts at hand and the conditions as they stand.
9/11: A Breakout Moment for the Internet & Cell Phones 📱
In hindsight, 9/11 was a moment that really illuminated the value of what were quite new technologies at the time: the internet and cell phones, in particular.
While I was never able to reach my mom by phone, I was able to get an email to her.
Now, we’ve experienced another crisis with COVID. New technologies have suddenly come to the forefront.
Telemedicine is one technology in particular that saw huge use during the lockdowns through companies like Teladoc Health Inc. (NYSE: TDOC). Another is telepresence through apps like Zoom Video Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: ZM).
COVID: A Breakout Moment for Telemedicine & Remote Working 👩💻
Today, of course, we take the internet and cell phones for granted. And in a few years, we’ll look back and see various new technologies that showed their value during COVID in the same light — as obvious opportunities.
Our portfolios are filled with no-brainer and obvious opportunities that are on the verge of adoption to solve the long-term problems/opportunities caused by COVID.
TDOC 0.00%↑, for example, addresses the chronic labor shortage (especially for doctors, nurses, and medical personnel).
ZM 0.00%↑ addresses the new reality that many people now work in a remote or hybrid environment.
In hindsight, these companies and their technology platforms will be seen as no-brainers, and their stocks will be huge winners.
Now’s the time to buy them — before everyone comes to bid them higher. TDOC 0.00%↑, ZM 0.00%↑, and many others like them are in our Silver, Gold, and Diamond Tier portfolios.

That morning is etched in my memory forever. When I think of my story the tears begin to flow and the deep feeling of fear and vulnerability come back like it was happening all over again. But I never felt more proud and thankful to be an American and never felt more connected to my fellow Americans. To all of those that lost lives, loved ones and still experience the traumas of that day, I offer my loving prayers and hope that our country never goes through something like that ever again, but I have faith we have become stronger, more resilient and moved in a forward direction as all those that were taken from us would expect us to do.
I am a proud Patriot of the USA!🇺🇸
Thanks for sharing your memories Paul!
I am a CPA. 9/11/2001, I was waiting for a client to come to my home to do a tax return. Turned on the TV & saw that the 1st tower had just been hit; then the 2nd. My client & I watched for hours until finally working on the tax return.
My Navy son was on an aircraft carrier; he was 20 years old. I knew his ship was leaving Mayport, FL for training. TV said an aircraft carrier was headed to New York. Told my wife that had to be his ship. I was right. I waited up until after midnight, knowing he would eventually call. Told me everyone was given permission to call family & tell them "I am fine but I MAY NOT be able to contact you for 6 months" because no one knew what would happen next. The ship guarded New York for 2 weeks, then a few weeks later they left for Iraq/Iran area for 6-7 months (as originally scheduled). He was over there 4 times in his 20 years of Navy service; almost all of it as a Yellow Shirt on the carrier flight deck. (Per reports, the SECOND most dangerous job in the world; second only to Oil Well Firemen.)
So proud of him and all the others who served and those who serve now! I still cry easily when I think of what happened and what so many people did to "help" others.
Thank you Paul & everyone @ ATG.
Don Nelson
PS - my son said they knew something had happened when their southbound ship made the sharpest U-turn possible at high speeds. The flight deck was really leaning to one side!
