Dean: Price Is Not Your Friend 🐍
If you were to describe the stock market as a game, many would likely find it boring.
Buy low, sell high. Seems simple enough, right?
But if you introduce the most harrowing antagonist of this game — one that clouds judgement, leads you into temptation, and away from great opportunities . . .
Then the game becomes a lot more interesting.
The nemesis I’m referring to is price.
When it’s up, everyone wants the stock — even if they must pay a premium.
But when it’s down?
Investors don’t bother to look at the company’s fundamentals and pile into shorts.
That was the case for one particular stock.
Now, investors are chasing it as it soars . . .
From Loser to 800% Winner 🤑
I’m talking about Coinbase Global Inc. (Nasdaq: COIN), recently added to the S&P 500.
This stock traded for as little as $33 in the bear market:
Now, it’s up 800% from the bottom — and up over 1,000% at recent highs of $343!
But we believe that few are positioned for what will happen in the months and years to come.
If you read my Substack from yesterday on Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD), then you know that BTC is due for a big reprice.
As this happens, one of the big winners of this repricing will likely be COIN 0.00%↑.
That’s because it operates the largest publicly-traded crypto exchange in the world.
In essence, it generates revenue from facilitating the crypto trades of retail and institutional investors.
And based on its recent earnings, it’s in an ideal position to ride the BTC wave!
Numbers Don’t Lie 👀
In the first quarter (Q1), COIN 0.00%↑ generated $2 billion in revenue — up about 23% year over year (YoY) — despite extreme volatility in the crypto market.
Cash on its balance sheet ballooned to $9.9 billion, up about 40% YoY!
This massive increase in capital allows it to acquire smaller crypto businesses to grow its offerings and position in the market:
The crypto business acquisition race is on, with its competing exchange, Robinhood Markets Inc. (Nasdaq: HOOD), acquiring WonderFi:
In the short term, we expect COIN 0.00%↑ to rocket alongside BTC, should it make new highs.
But in the long term?
I wouldn’t be surprised to see COIN 0.00%↑ trade much higher in the years to come.
That said, COIN 0.00%↑ is cyclical and sensitive to the price of crypto — so hold it with that in mind.
