Paul: Let’s Take a Trip Back to 1999 📼
If you ask me for the greatest scientific achievement of the last 25 years . . . I’d have to go with the decoding of the human genome in 1999.
This astonishing achievement not only earned Nobel prizes for three members of the Human Genome Project . . .
It sent biotech stocks surging!
Back to Biology 🧫
At the time, I was an inexperienced stock analyst for a $500 million growth/tech-oriented stock fund.
Seeing these stocks surging higher, my boss tasked me with figuring out what was going on.
I took the task on with some trepidation . . .
The truth is, I struggled in biology in high school and was intimidated by all the terminology and jargon in this new science.
Despite this, I put my fears aside, bought a couple of textbooks on genetics and molecular biology, and got started.
Using Google, I was able to cobble together a working understanding of the basic science behind the Human Genome Project.
The Wait ⌚ Is Over
In hindsight, the investment excitement about the Human Genome Project turned out to be a false alarm . . .
Biotech stocks kept surging in 1999 and into the market peak in 2000 — and from there, they crashed lower.
Through three market cycles — from 2001 to now — the anticipated human genome-driven boom simply didn’t materialize.
As it turns out, while the scientific achievement was incredible, the decoded human genome had no immediate, large-scale commercial application.
Now, 25 years later, this extraordinary scientific achievement has yet to spur investment success the size and scale of Apple, Google, or Microsoft.
A Lifesaving ❤️🩹 Test
I believe that’s about to change — the Human Genome Project achievement is finally ready to fulfill the promise that everyone believed in during 1999.
The reason it took so many years is a long story for another day.
Today, let’s cut to what’s going on right now . . .
Right now, companies are beginning to harness the power of the human genome through testing.
For example, Guardant Health Inc. (Nasdaq: GH) — one of our Gold Tier holdings — recently received approval for a colorectal cancer (CRC) test.
This approval is a big deal. Because this test allows people, for the first time, to be easily screened and treated for CRC.
Catching CRC early means easier, better treatment with better odds of success.
CRC is the 2nd most common cause of cancer death in the U.S. The American Cancer society estimates that over 52,550 will die annually from CRC based on over 153,000 diagnoses.
However, with GH 0.00%↑’s easy, convenient, and cost-effective screening process, the number of deaths will likely plummet as people are diagnosed and treated early.
The Future 🔮 of Healthcare
GH 0.00%↑’s test wouldn’t be possible without the Human Genome Project.
After all, it’s able to detect very early signs of CRC by looking for patterns and changes in the genome.
Now, GH 0.00%↑ isn’t the only company using the Human Genome Project’s work to power its science . . .
Illumina Inc. (Nasdaq: ILMN), GRAIL Inc. (Nasdaq: GRAL), Exact Sciences Corporation (Nasdaq: EXAS), Natera Inc. (Nasdaq: NTRA), and many others are also harnessing its incredible power to create new tests.
Other companies — like Blueprint Medicines Corporation (Nasdaq: BPMC) — are using the same science to design precise medications that work based on gene markers that increase efficacy and reduce side effects.
An Unexpected 😲 Boom
The thing about markets is that they often boom in a different place than everyone expects.
For example, people expected internet stocks to boom after the crash in 2000 . . . yet the next bull market was in oil, commodities, China, real estate, and finance stocks.
Right now, everyone is expecting an AI boom — and no question about it, AI is going to be a major technology over time.
However, like the Human Genome Project, booms often have a way of taking long, complicated routes before they fulfill their potential.
My gut says that the next big market boom will come from the now-forgotten achievement of the Human Genome Project.

I truly hope we can see light at the end of the tunnel. These stocks seem to want to break out then get pulled back. I believe the catalyst will be the interest rate cut, it will spur people to make the leap as future projections of growth and earnings increase for these small cap companies.
